Security Tips
« What to do?
• Keep your luggage in view at all times and never ask strangers to watch it for you.
• Keep your passport in a safe place in your hotel and carry with you a photocopy of the photo page and your entry date into Honduras.
• Keep all air and land travel vouchers, money, important documents and travelers checks in a safe place. Also keep records of any numbers that appear on thesedocuments. Change your money in a bank or hotel, never in the street.
• Don’t wear valuable jewelry. Only carry enough money to cover that day’s needs.
• Keep your eye on valuable items like cameras and camcorders. Keep your wallet in a safe place in your clothing.

When renting a car it is very important that you familiarize yourself with all of the country’s driving rules and regulations. Please familiarize yourself with the following Honduran transit laws:
• Always carry a current driver’s license, a photocopy of your passport and your car rental contract. You may drive for 90 days under a license issued in your home country.
• Respect all maximum and minimum speed limits posted along Honduran roads and highways.
• It is illegal to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If a police office stops you and requests that you take a blood alcohol test, you must do so. If the test is positive you may be arrested.
• Under Honduran law all drivers and passengers must wear a seatbelt.
• If a police officer signals for you to stop your car, you are obliged by law to comply. The officer should be wearing a uniform. Be sure to ask to see his or her identification.
• All personal documents and vehicle papers are considered private property and may not be confiscated by any officer under any circumstances, except for your driver’s license in case of infraction. If an officer confiscates your driver’s license, you must be given a copy of the ticket.
• If you are involved in an accident, wait on the scene until a transit officer and a representative from your rental company’s insurance company arrives. Do not move the vehicle until it has been investigated by both.
• Under no circumstances should money be given directly to a transit officer. All tickets should be paid in a local bank.
• It is better not to stop if signaled to do so by unknown persons on the road.
• Don’t walk or park your vehicle in dark areas. Leave your vehicle in a parking lot, never the street. Never leave valuable items in your car, especially within sight of passers-by.
• All taxi drivers should be visibly identifiable. Routes within the city have a fixed fare; fares to other destinations should be negotiated before getting into the taxi.
• For more information, contact the local transit police.

For security reasons, follow these recommendations at national parks, archaeological sites and beaches.
• National parks are equipped with well marked trails to make your visit saber and more pleasant: USE THEM.
• Always travel in groups of two or more when visiting these areas.
• Remember to carry with you drinking water, insect repellent and sun block for a more pleasant visit.
• When visiting the beach, inquire at the hotel or ask a local resident about dangerous areas.
